Position Summary

The Farm Manager is responsible for the overall management, operation, and strategic planning of multi-species research farm facilities (swine and bovine). This role provides leadership in animal welfare, facility maintenance, regulatory compliance, and coordination of animal research studies. The Research Farm Manager ensures efficient day-to-day farm operations while collaborating with cross-functional teams, including R&D, Quality, and Facilities, to support the company's research goals.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Supervision

  • Lead and supervise farm personnel, including Farm Coordinator and any other staff assigned to farm operations.
  • Provide training, mentoring, scheduling, and performance management to ensure a safe, compliant, and productive work environment.

Farm Operations Management

  • Oversee daily care and husbandry of swine and cattle to ensure health, biosecurity, and welfare standards are met.
  • Manage animal acquisition, housing logistics, feeding protocols, and medical observations in collaboration with veterinary and research teams.
  • Maintain accurate records for animal inventory, health, and study activities.
  • Ensure proper handling and disposal of euthanized animals and biohazardous waste.

Research Support

  • Coordinate and schedule animal studies with R&D staff, including sampling, treatments, and procedural support.
  • Ensure compliance with study protocols and biosafety procedures (BSL-2 environments).
  • Review and approve data collection practices; ensure accurate and timely documentation.

Facility & Equipment Oversight

  • Manage the upkeep and maintenance of research farm infrastructure, equipment, and grounds.
  • Ensure all equipment is operational and compliant with regulatory standards; coordinate with maintenance teams as needed.
  • Responsible for responding to and handling alarm calls and conditions that may arise in the daily operations of the facilities. This includes responding and/or scheduling employees to respond to emergency situations that could arise do to weather-related events, equipment failure, etc.

Regulatory Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure adherence to internal policies and external regulations (e.g., USDA, IACUC, biosafety, animal welfare).
  • Promote a culture of safety and compliance, including development of SOPs and emergency protocols.

Strategic Planning & Budgeting

  • Assist in development and management of farm operational budgets.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement, resource optimization, and facility upgrades to support long-term research objectives.

Qualifications

Required Education & Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of experience managing animal care operations, preferably in a research or production environment involving swine and/or cattle.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading teams and managing animal studies in a biosafety-compliant setting.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience working with veterinary biologics, vaccine trials, or laboratory diagnostics.
  • Background in vet tech, research coordination, or regulatory compliance a plus.

Certifications & Licenses

  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Animal care or biosafety certifications are preferred.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and communication abilities.
  • Knowledge of animal health, husbandry, and biosecurity standards.
  • Ability to interpret and enforce regulatory guidelines and SOPs.
  • Proficient in data management, recordkeeping, and standard reporting practices.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Ability to work in both office and farm settings.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. regularly, with occasional lifting up to 75 lbs.
  • Exposure to laboratory and farm environments with animals and BSL-2 pathogens.
  • Must follow all safety and biosafety protocols.
