Summary of Job


The Village of Caledonia Fire Department, Racine County, Wisconsin, is seeking highly motivated, dedicated fire service personnel to fill current vacancies for the full-time Firefighter/Paramedic position. The Caledonia Fire Department (CFD) is an "all-hazards" career department that provides fire and medical services to the 27,804 Villages of Caledonia, Wind Point, and North Bay residents. In 2025, the department will be budgeted for 50 personnel: (1) Fire Chief, (1) administrative assistant, (3) Battalion Chiefs, (9) Lieutenants, and (36) firefighters/EMT basic or paramedics. In 2024, the department responded to 3527 calls for emergency services while working a 24/48 schedule.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities


  • The firefighter is responsible for fire suppression, fire inspection, vehicle and fire station maintenance, hazardous material response, rescue operations, and emergency medical services.
  • Operate and perform maintenance checks on all fire department vehicles and equipment.
  • Respond as a medical team member to bring basic or advanced emergency medical care to the community's citizens.
  • Prepare reports and maintain records under the supervision of the shift commander/shift officer.
  • Participate in daily training exercises and classroom lectures.
  • Conduct fire inspections in various occupancies in the jurisdiction.
  • Perform duties as a fire apparatus driver and motor pump operator when assigned.
  • Perform duties as a certified firefighter/EMT/paramedic according to the department's criteria and standards.
  • Responsible for station cleanliness and maintenance of apparatus, tools, equipment, and all other fire department property.
  • Conduct demonstrations, tours, and public speeches on fire safety, fire prevention, CPR, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, first aid, and other subjects to the public

Qualifications
Applicants must provide proof of the following:
  • Valid Driver's License
  • High School or Equivalency Diploma
  • Valid State of Wisconsin or National Registry - Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
  • State of Wisconsin Paramedic licensure is preferred. Current Paramedic students are strongly encouraged to apply. Paramedic licensure may be required as a condition of employment and must be obtained before an 18-month probationary period. CFD is an authorized preceptor agency for WCTC, MATC, and Gateway paramedic students.
  • State of Wisconsin Certified Firefighter I certification is required at the time of hire. State of Wisconsin Firefighter II certification is required before completing an 18-month probationary period.
  • Candidate Physical Ability Test Certification (CPAT) at the time of hire.
Candidates must pass oral interviews, medical and psychological exams, and background investigations. Residency within the State of Wisconsin is required.

This position's annual salary (2025) is $65,507.55 to $86,679.90 for firefighter/EMT and $68,782.93 to $91,924.04 for firefighter/Paramedic (steps 1 through 7).
State of WI residency is required within three months of completing an 18-month probationary period.


The Village has the authority to employ lateral transfers to hire firefighter paramedics. For eligibility as a lateral transfer, a candidate must:
  1. Be currently employed as a full-time non-probationary employee with a municipal fire department.
  2. Possess, at a minimum, a State of Wisconsin licensure or National Registry certification as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic and Wisconsin State Firefighter Level 2 or equivalent.
  3. CPAT Certification on date of hire.
  4. The Village and the Police & Fire Commission may establish additional qualifications. Lateral transfers shall follow the same application, eligibility, and onboarding process as all new hires.
Lateral transfers shall be evaluated for previous service by the Fire Chief to determine reasonable commensurate pay and vacation recommendations. In consultation with the Fire Chief, the Human Resources Manager shall have the final determination for placement on this Agreement's Wage and Vacation schedule, up to a maximum of five years of service.


Rank, longevity, sick leave accrual, current and post-retirement benefits, and probationary period will be in accordance with the guidelines specified for new employees as outlined in the current collective bargaining agreement. The most recent date of hire with the Village of Caledonia Fire Department shall be utilized to establish seniority.

  • Skills in firefighting, EMT, fire inspection and public relations
  • Those candidates possessing other pertinent certifications and/or training will receive additional consideration.
Health, Dental and Vision Insurance:
Village of Caledonia contributes 85% of premium cost of Health insurance, 50% of premium costs for Dental family or single coverage for full-time employees and no contribution to Vision insurance (effective on the first of the month following a full calendar month of employment), subject to annual approval by the Village Board.

Holidays: 10 paid holidays

Vacation:
  • 1 week after one year of service
  • Two weeks per year after two years of service
  • Three weeks per year after eight years of service
  • Four weeks per year after thirteen years of service
  • Five weeks per year after twenty years of service
Retirement Benefits:
Employees are eligible to participate in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) upon hire and meeting WRS eligibility requirements.
  • Wisconsin Retirement System: WRS contribution rates are set annually by WRS, employee and employer contributions to this plan are required. 2021 rates are as follows:
    • General Employees: 6.75 Employer Contribution, 6.75 Employee Contribution
    • Protective Employees: 11.75 Employer Contribution; 6.75 Employee Contribution
  • Deferred Compensation: Village of Caledonia currently makes available to its employees, on a voluntary basis, participation in a deferred compensation plan. Under this plan, each employee may, on a tax-deferred basis, contribute up to 15% (with a maximum annual contribution established by the IRS) of gross earnings. Village provides no contributions to this plan.
Life Insurance:
Village provides a basic term life insurance policy (subject to annual approval by the Village Board). The amount of term insurance provided depends upon the employee's annual salary.

Disability Insurance:
Short- and long-term disability coverage is available to employees through payroll deduction at the employee's cost.

Sick Leave: 1 day (20 hours) per month for each completed month of employment, with a maximum accrued carry-over of 3120 hours. Village of Caledonia, WI
